Today we looked at social bookmarking, different types of search engines, and how to do advanced search in Google.
The slide show above is a list of all of the different search engines and different ways to uses google advance search.
I will defiantly use all of these search engines in the future. The search engine that I think is the most useful is the Instra Grok or Wolfham Alpha, which is a search engine were you can type any question or math problem I mean anything, and it will give you a the answer, plus and explanation for that topic. It is awesome, you are about to add notes and save the information that you need the most. I defiantly will use these sites to have my students go to if they are in need of assistance at home, and do not have anyone there to help them. I really think that this is a great enhancement to the internet, if used the right way. Students are able to monitor their own learning when they are checking work for errors. There is always going to be a few students who cheat on homework assignments and use the sites in the wrong way, so I will have to be careful and check for understanding with bell work. If I see a students got 100% on their homework, and missed questions on the bell work, then I know who cheated and will have a chat with them.
Another idea I think is interesting is that I knew in Google that you can search only scholarly articles, but I never knew that you could search by reading level. This is awesome, it narrows down the information that is listed on the internet. It will be a whole a lot easier for students to search for information because they can find information they can read and understand. The information they search for was made for them not for college students, or adults, it was strictly made for the students. This will also help me as a teacher because when I look for information for students I will be able to search and find it a lot quicker with the different reading levels listed.
The last thing we worked on in class is to create a Diigo account which by the way is FREAKIN AWESOME. Anything I bookmark from my home computer will be readily available if need be when I log into my account. I can see other bookmarks that my classmates think are important, and see what notes they took and everything. This is something that will continually be used in my future. Its so much easier to have all the information I need in one place, everything is organized with tags that you put on, so you can find it that much easier.
